Carbone turns PDFs and scanned pages into clean Markdown, with their headings, lists and tables, entirely on your Mac.
Short description
Carbone is a Mac app that copies documents out as Markdown. A digital PDF is read from its own text layer, exactly; a scan or a photo goes through OCR on the Mac. Either way, the result keeps the document's structure: headings as headings, lists as lists, tables as tables, and no page numbers in the middle of a sentence. No account, no upload.
Longer description
Carbone keeps a library rather than handing back a file. Documents are added where they lie, never copied, and converted one at a time in a queue; every conversion is kept, sorted into groups, and searchable down to the page. Each document reads with its page beside its Markdown. Each page is routed on its own: the text layer where the PDF has usable text, Apple's Vision where it does not, so a contract signed and scanned back in is read both ways.
Paper archives come in through a camera: put pages under a document camera, an iPhone through Continuity Camera, or Desk View, and turn them. Carbone captures each page once it holds still, tells it from the last, straightens it, and files the lot as one document.
With Carbone Pro, agents on the same Mac, such as Claude Code or Codex, reach the library through a local MCP server: they search every document and read the pages they need as Markdown, each page marked with its number so a quote can be traced to it. The server is off by default, listens on 127.0.0.1 only, and reads only the folders the user allows.

What not to write
Please don't describe planned features as shipping ones. The iPhone and iPad apps, downloadable models for hard pages, searchable-PDF export and field extraction (amounts, dates, parties) are all roadmap. Carbone doesn't send documents to an AI service: an agent connected over MCP may send what it reads to its own cloud model, and that is the agent's doing, not Carbone's. And OCR is not perfect: a scan can come back with a misread digit or a lost table cell, which is why Carbone keeps each page beside its Markdown.
